Purebreds, Mutts and Designer Dogs

People have long had a love affair with mixed breed dogs or “mutts”. These dogs tend to vary quite a lot in size, looks and personality, even when they come from the same family. Mutts as a rule have very excellent healthiness and they make great pets.

A mixed breed dog is not a purebred and it may not be known if the parents of the dog are purebreds. They are basically dogs from an unspecified heritage and a questionable hereditary line. They are typically smart and wonderful and they make great pets but their family tree is unidentified.

A purebred on the other hand is a dog that has two parents that are both of the identical kind. Many times there are extensive records of the genetics of these dogs and breeders are very careful in their breeding techniques to make sure that they turn out the strongest hereditary tendencies.

While some folks may prefer a purebred dog for a pet and others are just happier to have a mutt for a pet, there is also an alternative choice that a pet owner may want to think about. You can get a hybrid dog or as they are sometimes called a “designer dog”.

Hybrids are a cross of two purebred dogs from two different breeds. They are separate from a mutt because their heredity is well-known. Each of their parents are purebreds with genetic lines that can frequently be traced back many generations.

Hybrid dogs are becoming rather the mania these days. You see them the world over from movies to dog shows. These dogs tend to have the best characteristics from each of the breeds and more often than not a good combination of both breeds.

These designer dogs usually have amusing names that are a blend of the two breed names such as puggle, for a pug and beagle mix, poogle for a poodle and pug mix, cockapoo for a cocker poodle mix, goldendoodle, which is a golden retriever and poodle mix and the list goes on and on.

A hybrid dog can be a great pet and if you cannot come to a decision on a individual breed a hybrid may be a wonderful pet for you. They are usually the best of the two breeds and they are likely to possess better health than the standard purebred. They have characteristics from both breeds and they are usually very interesting and enjoyable dogs to possess!
