Type

Did you know that there are different species of canaries? Well there are. You should be able to find the generic yellow birds at your local pet store. If you’re looking for a less common type, you will probably have to consult a breeder. Make sure you look into several different breeders though.

Health

It should go without saying that you want to pick out a healthy bird. It’s important that you look for a bird that’s quite active. If he appears to be lethargic, don’t take him home. Parasites can also be a problem, so you should try to check for them. They commonly hide on the feet, beak, or under the feathers.

Molting

It’s also best to avoid buying a molting bird. Molting puts a lot of physical stress on these little birds. You will only stress him out even more if you move him to a new environment. Your bird can easily die because of this. He may die mere hours after getting home.
